'Stronger together': KingCo League launches student leadership group

Last fall, the KingCo League in Washington welcomed seven new schools into its athletic conference. It was the first major change the conference had experienced in 20 years.

Yonni Mills, athletic director at Bothell High School, was excited for the addition to the conference. The new teams, which upped the league from 17 to 24 schools, brought both ethnic and economic diversity. It also gave the league more schools at the 2A level. But along with the positives, she expected there to be some turbulence, too.

“Sportsmanship is always something that we’ve struggled with and adding new schools presented a lot of new challenges because the kids didn’t know each other,” Mills said.

Emily Zimmerman, athletic director at Evergreen High School, echoed both Mill’s excitement and concerns. With COVID-19 pausing sports, she wanted to find a way for student-athletes to still connect off the field.

“Coming into a league as a new AD with new students who couldn’t build relationships through sports, my thought was to build the relationships before we play,” Zimmerman said. “Knowing we weren’t going to be doing sports all fall, it became important to me and other ADs to create an advisory group.”

The start of KSALT

The league launched the group, called the KingCo Student Athlete Leadership Team (KSALT), in October. KSALT consists of 24 athletic directors and two student-athletes from each school, selected by ADs for their positive leadership skills. Along with building relationships and leadership skills, the group allows student-athletes to share feedback and input on conference decisions.

“We are laying the foundation, developing trust, building leadership skills and starting to involve student voice in the decisions that are made for the KC League,” Zimmerman said.

The group meets virtually every month. Each meeting starts with introductions and ice breakers, then the athletes dive into break-out sessions. The ADs encourage students to lead the conversations, which range in topic from school colors to sportsmanship.

“We’ve talked a lot about COVID and how the kids feel about all the Zoom meetings. We’ve also talked a lot about leadership,” Zimmerman said. “They’ve done a lot of sharing to get to know each other and learn about the different schools.”

A place for important conversations

The students have also discussed more serious topics such as mental health, race and inclusion. These conversations help athletes get in front of their differences before ever stepping foot on the court, Zimmerman said. Students have really stepped up for these discussions, she added, and clearly see the value in having them. On top of having key conversations, the group has actionable plans, too.

“A sportsmanship statement exists in our league that we would like them to edit and revise so it’s student driven,” Mills said.

KSALT would also like to start inviting guest speakers to their meetings. And as the group moves forward, they eventually want to host meetings in person. Although the pandemic highlighted the need for KSALT, there are no plans to dissolve the group once the pandemic ends.

“This group has been so valuable, I can’t even imagine how powerful it’ll be when we’re back into regular sports,” Zimmerman said. “Student voice in the decision-making of adults is so important. The support from ADs, buy-in from the kids, and being at the same table having these conversations has been incredible.”

VNN for High School Coaches: Creating a Team Page, Score Reporting and Accepting Donations

VNN’s Alex Kooi gives a 15 minute run-through of the VNN basics for coaches, including how to set up your team page, report scores and accept team donations.

Alex Kooi: Hey guys. My name is Alex Kooi, I’m one of the school account managers here working at VNN, and today we’re actually going to go through what a coach can do to set up their team page, go over score reporting, and how to accept team donations.

So I’m going to share my screen here and I’ll be starting on VNN.com today, where we can get your team page set up here. Perfect. So on my screen you should see Lyndonathletics.com. I have made myself the boys soccer coach on this school, so I’m going to go over here and check out my boys soccer page. So we can have them side by side, so we can check out what we’re doing from get VNN, and how it looks on the public site.

Perfect. So you should see right now that I have nothing set up on my team page. No social media accounts connected, no pictures posted yet or anything like that. So we got a fresh slate here. Perfect, now I’m going to go back to my home dashboard here, and I’m starting, you’ll notice on getVNN.com guys, this is a mobile site that you can use on your phone as well. So whether you’re out at the gym, on the road, a bus ride home, whatever this might be, all of our software is mobile compatible. So whether you’re on your computer or you just need to do it on the fly, you can do it from either whatever mobile device you have, whether it’s an Andriod, iOS, or any desktop at home as well.

So starting on my dashboard here, I’m actually going to go down to the bottom row where it says go to teammate, to “Set up my team page” here. Once I click on “teammate”, it’ll take me to a summary page of my program for boys varsity soccer. You’ll see the different coaches that have access to this team, I can click to see my roster as well.

We’re actually going to start with this blue ribbon here from left to right, starting with manage social. So for here, what you can do on VNN, is you can actually connect a Facebook page and a Twitter account to your team page. What that will do, is anytime boys soccer for me is tagged in, like a score report or a photo gallery or post anything like that, it’ll actually automatically share it to my social media accounts. That way the people that are following me there can see any time there’s updates, specifically for Lyndon boys soccer.

So I’m going to go ahead and click on “Connect Twitter” here, and because I’m already signed in on safari, it’ll automatically add my Twitter account for me that I use for being in here. Perfect, so now if I go back to my boys soccer page and hit refresh, we will now see a Twitter icon pop up right next to my overall record. That way people can see where to follow you guys con social media when they are checking out your team page, and that way you know it’s actually going to be automatically posting on your behalf to help manage your social media accounts.

So next, after connecting my social media account, I’m going go to this “Edit team” button to set up my team page. So on this Edit team page, if you scroll down, you’ll notice there’s an “add photo” feature and a team info box. So I’m going to first add my team photo to kind of help customize my homepage with the picture of our team from last year. So I’m going to click on “Choose a file”. I’ll go to this boys soccer team pic, perfect. And then on top of that too I’m, in this team info box as a coach, I can put whatever information I want here. I see a lot of coaches will put their contact information, I see some put a message about a fundraiser they’re doing, or a link to their powerpoint from parent night, or whatever it is that you want to have available on your team page.

You guys can edit here, as it’s your space to kind of customize, make your own. So I’m just going to put my own contact information, I’ll say I’m the head coach, Alex Kooi, and my email, alexkooi3@gmail.com, and then phone number, (360) 318-4000, and then just to make this a little bit better formatted, I’m going to center it. We’ll put it in bold, and then you’ll see a blue update button pop up anytime you make changes to your team page. So I’m going to update here, I’ll give our system a few seconds to kind of reload it, and then we’ll see what that update looks like on our team page.

Perfect. So now on the team homepage itself, people can see this graphic I put up for my team picture, you can see the information I put up right beneath that, and then down below you’ll see all the photo galleries or score reports that we’re tagged in on the news feed of our homepage.

Sweet. Next we’re going to check out what it looks like to fill out our roster page here. So back on my teammate page right next to Edit team, you’re going to see an AD athlete button to the right of “Add coach”. Now add coach, that’s how you can add your assistant coach to have access to the team as well. So maybe your JV coach or your C team coach wants to also help manage the varsity team, this is where you can invite them to also have access to help you out there. But today, we’re going to go right to add athlete to set up our roster. Now, if you have a football roster, of, you know, 60-some kids, we have an import Excel file feature here, where you can actually just use our spreadsheet and upload a roster all at once. I’m actually just going to do the single athlete add here, so you can see what it looks like when you add a profile picture to your roster entries as well. So let me put my name, and I’ll say it’s Alex Kooi, graduated next year, and then the email address and phone number is completely optional.

That does not go to the public site, only you and your coaches can view this contact info, so that you can have one place to find where to contact kids if you need to. Now the other option information on here is adding profile information. So let’s say I wear the number 12, 6 feet 3 inches, and I’ll put my playing weight down of 185. That was about many pounds ago, and I’ll say center mid. Now lastly I’m going to add a profile picture to this as well just to fill out my roster card.

So I’ll go to profile copy, you can then crop whatever section of the headshot the athlete you want and add it just like that. So I can hit save and close or save and add another, typically if you’re filling out your roster you’ll probably hit save and add another several times. So now if I just go back to my team page here, I’m going to to now click on the roster button right next to our schedules, and you’ll see all the different roster entries that you’ve added to your team here. So the very bottom, you see my last entry with my name.

If I click on it, it pulls up a whole profile card for me with my graduation year, height, weight, position, hometown, all that sort of stuff. Cool, as a gut check, you always want to make sure too to check the stuff out on your phone as well, so that way if you’re ever viewing it from an iOS device or android, you can see how it formats really nicely and even looks better from a phone most times.

Awesome, so you guys that pretty much wraps up how to set up your team page. We went over how to set up a roster and sync your social media accounts, the next thing we’re going to get into is how to report scores onto your schedule. So you’ll see here I added a January 26th game against our crosstown rivals of Blended Christian. And the rest of our games are showing up down below. Now, what’s nice for your fans and parents, is if you want to ever check out the games against Ferndale High School or Lakewood High School, your VNN site will actually cross the link between other VNN schools, so you can then check out Ferndale’s soccer program, and vice versa.

So let’s go in here and go to our school reporting software called PressBox. So from teammate here, I’m actually going to go up to the top right and click on PressBox, so I can go to my score reporting app. Perfect, now obviously you can’t update score against, you know, games that haven’t happened yet, but for your past events you’ll see a new post option, where you can go in and report scores that have already happened this week. So I’m going to click on “New post” here, and I’ll say that we beat Lyndon Christian 2-3. Let’s say we’re down 2-1 in the first half, and then we pulled two goals off to pull off the win.

Now, PressBox will actually automatically create a title for you, you’ll see here in the gray highlight it says Boys Varsity Soccer Beats LC 3-2, I’m actually going to make my own post title and say Boys Soccer Wins Home Opener Against Crosstown, and then just so that nobody gets confused, I’ll put test in front of it. And then lastly, PressBox always wants you to include some sort of recap. Now, this can be as short and simple as, Boys played a great game. I see a lot of coaches will include whatever quote they typically give to the paper in here as well.

What’s really nice about PressBox guys, is if you have a local media source that wants to receive your scores, you can actually go over to “Team contacts” here and enter them in to get email reports from PressBox of all the games happening, so that way you’re not up in the website and trying to call local media. PressBox can just take care of that for you.

So I’ll just put testing in the recap here, and then lastly you always want to set some sort of featured image with your score report as well. So you’ll see a little picture icon in the bottom of the recap screen here, I’m going to click on attach featured image, and let me find this score graphic I just created, perfect, awesome. And then once you guys are done filling out your score report, all you need to do is hit “Save edits”.

And then once you’ve saved it you can then click “Post and share” on the very bottom here. What post and share will do is it’ll automatically update your team page to update your overall record. So let me just go back to my team home, and you’ll see now that my overall record is 1-0, and if I go down to my schedule page here, you’ll see the scoreboard popping up. Where it says Boys Soccer Wins Home Opener Against Crosstown Rival. So you’ll see the featured images, I attached the final score, and whatever recap I included as well. Now what’s really great is if I go back to my social media account that I connected, it’s also going to tweet out that score to social media as well. So you’ll see here it says New Story, Boys Soccer Wins Home Opener, and if I click on the graphic here, it just takes your fans back to the score report where they can then view the results from that game.

So just in summary, PressBox is going to be updating local media, whatever contacts you enter in there, to get their email score reports. It’ll update social media on your behalf, whatever accounts you connect there. It’s going to update your team’s overall record, and also your schedule page as well. So even 10 years from now if I want to go back to my senior season and check out all the different games and recaps from that year, I can actually go back to the 2020, 21s here and click on event recap by all these scores there.

Perfect, now I’m just going to go back to our main dashboard here to end with how we can set up team donations. So guys, one of the biggest trends that we’ve seen recently, just in terms of tech and the world of coaches, is a lot of teams are now switching to using digital fundraisers to try and raise funds in a new and different way. The reason it seems to work so well, is a lot of times your fundraisers are typically pretty local, and they’re hitting the same people over and over again. What’s great about having a donation page, is your out-of-state aunts and uncles that are never going to make it to your car wash. Now it’s actually really easy from their phones, whether it’s through Apple Pay, credit card, or anything like that. So your coaches will notice that all of you guys have, now have, a donate button on your team pages. Whether someone’s viewing your schedule, your roster, your team homepage, photos, or anything like that.

So we’ll have a highlighted donation option here for people to click on, and to get that set up all you have to do is go over to your GetVNN dashboard, and you’ll see a Rally Around Us fundraising option. So as long as you click “Get started” here, it’ll then take you to a page where you can fill out your info for us and request more information. We’ll actually have one of our fundraising reps from Rally Around Us reach out to you to help set up this donation page.

So just to give you a quick view of what it looks like, I’m going to pull open another school on our page here, just to give you an example, and then we’ll end it there for today. So I’d like to check out boys football here for Northmont. You’ll see they set up their donation page this August, and they raised around, I think it was like 14,000 during the course of their four week sprint. But the great part about your donation page is it stays active year-round on your site. So even when you’re posting scores, photos, or anything like that, you’ll actually see even a lot more organic donations come in throughout the year, because people will still be coming across that donation page.

So we keep a list of donors for you here, so you can see who’s given to the program. And then people can give really easily from their computer or from their phone.

Awesome guys, that’s it, we’re going to wrap it up here for today. I hope you enjoyed our time if you have any questions please feel free to reach out, my email is Alex@VNNsports.net, you can always use our live chat option as well if you ever get stuck trying to do anything we covered today, and yeah feel free to reach out to us if you’re trying to set up things like video highlights. If you have questions about scheduling, score reporting, anything like that, we want to be here to assist you guys as you help bring your program digitally online today. So we’ll wrap it up there!

How to Take Advantage of Your VNN Site's Free Video Highlights Section (featuring Rapid Replay)

VNN’s Katelyn Kasella caught up with Rapid Replay co-founders Nick Busto and Ben Swinford to talk about the new video section on all VNN sites, how to use the Rapid Replay app, what to upload when there’s no sports, and more.

Katelyn Kasella: Hey everyone! It’s 11 a.m. central, so we are going to get started here. Thank you all for joining us today for our first webinar of 2021, it’s been a few months since we’ve done one of these and we are very excited to kick off the year with Rapid Replay. We’re going to be talking today about how you can take advantage of your site’s free video player, how to use the app, and what you can post when there’s no sports going on, and what we’ve seen other schools posting.

So just quick introductions, my name is Katelyn Kasella, and I’m a brand content specialist at VNN. I’m joined today by our VP of sales Jayson Jones and Rapid Replay’s Ben Swinford and Nick Busto. Thank you guys so much for being here today!

A quick few housekeeping things, we do have everyone on mute just to keep the presentation running smoothly, but there’s a panel set up on the side with chat, so feel free to ask any questions that come to mind during the presentation. We have these webinars set for about a half hour, give or take, and we’re also recording the webinar so all this information will be available after we wrap up. We’ll post it on our YouTube channel and give that link out to everyone. So if there’s anyone that you want to share this with after the fact too, absolutely feel free. I’m going to let Jayson take it away from here to kind of talk about VNN’s mission and how Rapid Replay fits into it.

Jayson Jones: Awesome. I’ll share my screen here. Good to see everybody. Appreciate everyone making time for this today, let me get my screen shared here. Something just really briefly, something about VNN and our mission statement and what we’re trying to do for all of you really quickly, and then we want to get it turned over to our friends, partners at Rapid Replay.

So as you all know, our mission at VNN is to connect communities through sports. We’re huge fans of high school sports, we’re really appreciative of everything that you all do. We know that everything that you do as ADs, coaches, admins, just make high school sports happen. It’s always under appreciated, but in this weird time that we’re in right now, it’s very much so, all on you guys to make it happen. But, we’re happy we can help, we’re excited to bring our communities a little bit closer, and celebrate high school sports, and get everyone on to one place through VNN.

With that, we are trying to be the ecosystem and the main place that everything just lives for your athletic department online. And our goals is to make your lives easier with all of these great technology companies. And we like to say at VNN that VNN by itself is great, our partners by themselves are great, but really when you combine them all into one place, that’s where you hear that 1+1=3. So at VNN we have all of these great integration partners that we work with and everything just works well right on your VNN site.

And the one that I’m excited about today is VBO. We’ve all been spending a lot more time at home and are watching a lot more video than we ever have, and we’re excited to bring a place where you can get your awesome sports video footage right on your VNN website through Rapid Replay.

So on your video highlight section, over on the right-hand side here, will be a scrolling view of what your video section looks like on your site, but I’m also going to play a quick 20 second video where you can see actually live on one of our VNN websites with our partners at Easly in South Carolina, what the video section is on your new site. So when you go to the main page of your VNN site, you’ll see a new video highlight section. And we’re going to show you when you click in the view all videos, we now have a complete video highlight library where you’re able to post any of your video content.

It can be organized out through sport and team, and your fans now have a place where they can go and watch all of the best highlights from what’s happening at your school. Now these videos can be anywhere from a couple seconds to a couple minutes, and then we’ll get into the details on that. But it’s been really popular, we’re averaging over a million views a day on all of our videos at VNN, and so we’re excited to show more of you how you are able to take advantage of this.

So with that, I’ll turn it over to our friends Nick and Ben at Rapid Replay, and I’ll let them start sharing their screen and I’ll let them go over all the specifics and again, we’re appreciative of all of you as VNN partner schools, and thanks for taking time today. Nick and Ben, take it away.

Nick Busto: Thanks Jayson, I’m going to share my screen here. My name is Nick, we got my partner Ben here, but we’re really looking to kind of show what video looks like on your guys’ site today, answer any questions you have, and give a little background on us. I know we’ve worked with a bunch of you so far, but want to make it as easy as possible for everyone else to get video on your site.

As Jayson showed, this is kind of the new feel of a home page. That video highlight section, that’s always going to sit there. Anytime you add one video, now you have video on your site. And add he showed, this more videos section really gives a dynamic and next level feel. Our goal is to be able to make your site a little bit more attractive, a little bit stickier for your fans who do come to this site.

So a little bit of background on myself and Ben, we actually played baseball together at Cornell in college, and Ben is 100% the brains behind our organization. He is the, all of the technology and development for Rapid Replay. So we started this a few years ago, really trying to unite communities around videos. We were kids that never got to see our highlights, and had our parents behind the dugout with big camcorders to get recruiting tapes, and so with the rise of mobile phone technology and with service now, with 5G, we knew that there was an easier way to unite communities around video. So that’s how we started Rapid Replay, and now being able to partner with a company like VNN really allows us to meet you guys where you are.

You have these awesome websites that kind of are a one stop shop for the entire team community, and so we figure what better place to insert the video there. So everyone within the community is taking videos, including yourselves, your coaches, all your parents, we want to create the easiest possible ways to get that video where it needs to go.

So, I’ll kind of continue now, so before I start on to the mobile itself, I’ll go to how do you get video onto your site. So the easiest way is the Rapid Replay mobile app. That’s a way you can capture footage with your phone, get it onto your site as quickly as possible. But if you have pre existing footage, whether it’s a produced video or a highlight you’ve taken in the past, you can upload that footage and that can go on your site too. And you can do that one, through the mobile app right here, as we’ll get in to, or two, through the web upload through your VNN Portal. So if you do have pre existing video, you can get that to your site as well.

But in terms of getting up and running on the app, we try and make it as absolutely simple as possible. We have all of the VNN teams preloaded, so when you download the app, simply register for a profile, select yourself as a coach or an administrator, and as I mentioned, you’ll be able to find all of your teams within the app. So once you find your school, you have all of those teams and yourself as an administrator. It probably favorited all of those team by default for you, and then you’re good to go.

So once you’ve created that profile, now all of the schedules are also loaded into the app, so when you’re at a game, next time you’re at a game, you can just take your phone out. It will know what game you’re at, because the schedule and the GPS is there, so you just begin filming if you’re at the game, and the second you press stop, the camera will actually automatically clip the last 15 seconds of the video and upload it directly to your website. So if you use that in app camera, it’s designed to actually only capture the highlight.

So whenever you’re watching that basketball game, there’s 45 seconds of down time and then there’s the steal, a fast break and the dunk, right after the dunk you just press stop and all you have is the steal, the fast break and the dunk, you don’t have to worry about clipping the down time. As I said, you can also upload pre-existing videos, make those longer, but that’s how you use the in app camera. And once you upload the videos, as I said, those videos will directly be uploaded to your site. So those will be featured in this video highlights section.

This this video highlights section, those are what we call featured videos. So those are videos that are most attractive to the above the full, quick high lights, ESPN style plays. So generally, videos that will be featured there are under two minutes long, and they’re above average plays. So you can totally upload videos that are longer than two minutes, but generally only videos under two minutes will be featured on that home page. And that’s because we want to cycle through, make it as action packed as we can.

So one kind of, additional benefit to uploading videos like this is, you are part of the VNN ecosystem. So not only are these videos being published and promoted on your site to your community, but also as a part of the bigger VNN community. We’re selecting the best plays along with VNN, creating top plays, and publishing those on the VNN blog, on social media, and across all VNN sites. So every time you do upload a video, you are promoting your school model within your community, but truly on a national level.

So let’s see if we can play this video here.

[Video]: Hey everyone it’s Romy from VNN and this is the top high school sports highlights from schools in our network this week!

That’s all from us this week, but if you want to get your videos featured, all you have to do is download the Rapid Replay app. You can get it on iOS or on the Google Play store. You can also tag us on social media, we’re @officialvnn on Twitter and @vnnsports on Instagram. For now, I’m Romy, happy holidays, can’t wait to catch you in 2021 with more top plays.

NB: So as you can see, these are schools all across the country that are being featured. So when you do upload videos to rapid replay, you’re not only promoting your community, but hopefully you’re giving yourself to be featured across the country within that larger VNN ecosystem.

One thing I also want to mention, and Katelyn mentioned this at the beginning, and this is kind of an unexpected byproduct of COVID, really, is as schools began to shut down, it kind of coincided with when we put up the video player on the homepage, and not everyone unfortunately has been able to play as much as they’d like to for the past six, eight, nine months. And what we’ve seen is a pretty cool trend that, obviously schools are still uploading videos of live highlights, the game from last night, last week, but we’re seeing some additional footage, and really the schools taking advantage of the fact that this is a direct video player, a way to publish video to your entire community.

So what we’ve seen is highlight reels from previous seasons, some boing as far back as the 1980’s, kind of showing all time highlights and plays, tours of new facilities. So if you do have a new weight room or gym, new classrooms, show them off. You can again, you can take video of that whether it’s previously recorded, previously produces, and you just take it on your phone, and the second you hit stop it’s going on your site.

Another thing we’ve been able to see is sometimes athletic directors or coaches using this as a messaging tool. It’s on the front page of your website, and so we’ve seen some individuals use it as such, especially when they’re not able to be with their teams, with their coaches, try and keep morale high and keep everyone engaged and excited for this season to come and be able to get back on the field whenever that may be. It really is a versatile tool centered in highlights, but get creative. It’s a lot of fun to see the different ways that people have been able to utilize the tool. So we’re excited to see more of that, things we haven’t even thought of yet, and I’m sure you guys are going to love it.

JJ: Hey Nick those are great suggestions. Also to piggyback off that, I’ll share my screen one more time Katelyn. But you guys all know about this if you’re using Huddle. The video highlights section is a perfect place to put your actual Huddle highlight. There’s a setting inside of Huddle after the end of your games that will create a two, sometimes three minute long Huddle highlight video with just the highlights, and you’ll notice on the Cedar High site, it’s Cedarhighreds.com, but this is their Huddle highlight film, and most of the times these videos are really great content that Huddle will actually cut up for you and produce a one to three minute video with the recap information, and usually that just sits in a Huddle account and no one gets to see it, but now you can post that Huddle highlight video right into this section. So, there’s probably video content for a lot of you that is out there that you would just want to upload to VNN instead of having it sit somewhere else.

KK: That’s great, great to know. Alright let’s move into a couple questions that we have here. So question one, how do I ensure that the videos going into the play have good content or are appropriate?

NB: That’s a great question, I would say probably the number one question we’ve gotten asked over the past few years working with VNN. So there’s actually, we have a couple systems in place. One, to make sure that all the videos uploaded are completely appropriate, and then one in terms of filtering quality.

So the first is every video that gets uploaded, the first thing that happens is we have an individual, an actual human, that will go through and make sure that the video is completely appropriate. It’s not accidentally filming something inappropriate, there’s no swear words in the background, none of that. And actually, over the course of three years, we actually haven’t had any reports of inappropriate videos going on sites. So, that’s with over 300,000 videos uploaded, so that’s never happened, and we have a human looking at that.

So the second is another person who’s going to look at the video, and they’re going to determine the quality. And so we have a system that waits from both chronology, and quality of the video. And so mostly chronology, is what determines what videos you’ll see on that home page. As I said earlier, no videos over two minutes are generally going to be featured on the home page, so it’s generally going to be those shorter videos, and then the most high quality videos, the most exciting ones. The game winners, the dunks, those might last and stay around a little longer than maybe a free throw.

So we measure both the chronology and the quality of the video after we look at the appropriateness.

KK: Awesome thank you so much Nick. Next, we have can coaches upload videos or can only the AD?

NB: Great question, so that’s totally up to the AD. Coaches completely can upload video. In that coach’s portal, there is a web upload to the point where coaches can go in, they can upload online, they can upload through their Rapid Replay app, and also depending on how you want to run the video section of your website, you can broadcast that to fans. You can broadcast the fact that Rapid Replay is really a community upload tool, or if you want to control the video section yourself, and you want to make sure that it’s a certain way or looks a certain way, you can do all that yourself. Say it is centered around the ADs, they can expand that circle as wide as they’re comfortable.

KK: Perfect. Alright what else do we have here. Is the Android app working for this?

NB: Great question. So the Android app right now is going under a little bit of construction, it’ll be back here within the next month or two, but right now it is under construction. So if you do have an Android app, I would recommend using the web upload. It takes two seconds, you can go, it has all of the functionality from an upload perspective that the app does, the only thing you’re not going to get is you’re not going to get the in app camera.

So we’d recommend just taking videos on your Android phone and uploading them through the web portal like you have access to. It shouldn’t take any less time or be more of a hassel for you.

KK: Perfect thanks Nick. And it looks like last thing we have, it seems like the app only records 15 seconds and not the entire duration like the web upload, can you talk about this?

NB: Yeah of course. As I mentioned earlier, the in app camera, if you are filming with the app, its default is going to be to capture those last 15 seconds of the video, to press stop after the highlight happens. Now in your camera settings, if you want to record with the VNN app camera and have it be longer than 15 seconds, you can change those default settings. You can default up to a minute long if you want. So you have that flexibility, but from an upload perspective, that’s when you don’t have any sort of a time limit. We recommend just for the sake of the people on your website that they be less than five minute long videos, but whether it’s through the app or through the web upload, those portals will not adjust the time of your video. So you can upload entire videos to those.

KK: Perfect. Awesome. Thank you so much. Alright those are just some questions, if we didn’t answer your question today a sales rep will be in touch with you early next week and get back to you, so please watch for that email. Before we wrap up, Jayson, Nick, Ben, did you have anything else that you wanted to add?

JJ: No, the only thing I would say is this is all free to get started, free to use, so I think that’s important to know when you login to get VNN.com, you’ll see an upload video button there, that’s the web uploader that we’ve been referencing. But no cost, unlimited videos, we want you to post as many of those as you all can, and they’ve been really popular and really well received so far, so looking forward to seeing more of your athletic programs highlights on your VNN sites.

NB: I would just echo that sentiment, I cant’ wait to see more videos, to see some of these top plays compilations. So thank you guys, excited to get in touch, and if you have any questions feel free to email either Ben or myself individually, it’s nick@rapidreplay.co, looking forward to getting you guys up and running.

KK: Awesome. Thanks again everyone for joining today, and like he said, reach out if you have any questions or concerns, and look for the recording of this webinar to come. Like I said it will be available on our YouTube channel, and we’ll be sure to get that link out to everyone. Have a great weekend everybody.

NB: Thanks guys.

Partner Spotlight: DragonFly

Last month, VNN announced its newest partnership with DragonFly Athletics, provider of comprehensive sports management software for athlete registration, officiating, scheduling and payments.

DragonFly is a digital one-stop shop for everyone connected to high school sports. Its platform handles every aspect of the game from pre-season registration to post-game payments.

“We try to take all of the business of high school sports and give you one simple place to manage it,” said Rachael Merritt, Customer Engagement Manager at DragonFly. “We have tools for everyone connected to the game, whether you’re an admin, parent, athlete, athletic trainer, coach or official.”

Jessica Markham, Director of Partner Integration at VNN, said the company’s integration with DragonFly provides a streamlined process for athletic directors to administer forms, schedules and more from their VNN sites.

“Connecting the two platforms eliminates the need for double entry of schedules and rosters and makes that content readily available for the whole community,” Markham said.

The beginning

CEO Kirk Miller founded DragonFly in 2005. He was working as a Tech Director at the University of Alabama when he noticed how difficult it was for colleges to share game footage. A staff member had to make copies for everyone, then either drive and drop off the footage or mail it.

“Kirk saw this huge need for technology because the college was wasting so much money on travel, postage and other resources just to exchange game film,” Merritt said.

The company’s first product, DragonFly Storm, allowed colleges to securely share game footage. From there, DragonFly increased its products from solely video to paperwork, athletic training, credentialing and more. The company also expanded from working primarily with Division 1 football teams to high schools across the United States.

“About five years ago, we decided to focus more on high schools,” Merritt said. “We started by developing a software for athletic trainers to assign paperwork. From there, trainers asked how to collect physicals and other paperwork through this tool. They wanted one place to do it all digitally. As we listened more and more to customers, people asked for more tools and add-ons until we evolved to a single, comprehensive platform.”

The progression

More than 55,000 athletic directors and coaches nationwide currently use DragonFly, as well as several state-level organizations including Alabama (AHSAA)Arkansas (AAA)Delaware (DIAA)Georgia (GHSA)Mississippi (MHSAA)Maryland (MAA)Montana (MHSA), and Wyoming (WHSAA)

Through partnership with the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS), DragonFly also developed the NFHS Center for Officials Services to serve more than 20,000 contest officials and associations across nine states.

“We feel that we’re stronger with partnerships and connecting with leaders in high school sports can help us make more informed decisions,” Merritt said.

The future

As the company moves forward, they plan to continue listening to their customers to build out products that solve problems. As technology advances so will DragonFly, Merritt said. The company hopes to eventually partner with schools in every state.

“We want to make everyone’s lives easier when it comes to high school sports,” Merritt said.
