Mound Westonka (MN) revives homecoming button tradition
As part of the 2017-2018 Westonka Public Schools centennial celebration, the White Hawks are bringing back the time-honored tradition of a Homecoming button. Westonka students in grades K-12 were eligible to participate, and 15 total designs were submitted — the winner? Junior Joey Colianni Jr. who won a White Hawks All-Season Sports Pass, five free Homecoming buttons with his design and special recognition at Homecoming 2017.
Kalkaska (MI) Announces 1st Annual “Guardian Game”
One of Northern Michigan’s greatest rivalries, the Kalkaska Blazers and the Grayling Vikings is getting even better, with the announcement of the 1st Annual “Guardian Game” taking place October 20. The game, which will honor Kalkaska High School military veterans through several new traditions, also will award the coveted, traveling, Guardian Game Trophy to the winner.
Lake City (SC)'s Lee sets 5k record at Wilson Invitational
“I worked really hard all summer to get to this point. I am really happy about my race today.”
Going into this cross country season, junior Damien Lee had one goal on his mind: to set a new school record in the 5k. He did just that at the Wilson Invitational, lowering the Lake City (SC) record 35 seconds to 19:11.

A+ Federal Credit Union, and VNN have partnered on a campaign to connect the Texas-based company to local communities across the state. With 21 locations, and a mission that focuses on financial education and guidance, the access gives A+FCU the opportunity to accelerate their current trend of increasing membership, net deposits, and loans through speaking directly to their customers while they spend time being involved in local high school sports.
Founded in 1949, A+FCU has grown to serve almost 133,000 members and its assets now exceed $1.3 billion. The campaign, launching October 1, includes both display and audience retargeting tactics. Donuts prove no match for Fairborn (OH) athletes
Fairborn’s homecoming spirit week wrapped up last week with ABC 22 / FOX 45 visiting the school to get a behind-the-scenes look at the events taking place out on Yellow Springs Road. The segment included a drum off and donut-eating contest, which pitted the football team vs. cheerleaders vs. student body. The winner? Senior Dillon Breitfield (to the left in the video).
The clean sheet streak continues for Rocky River (OH) Girls Soccer
Leading, 3-0, late in the first half of a Sept. 6 home match against Valley Forge, Rocky River yielded a goal at the 1:39-mark. Since then, the Pirates have outscored five foes (Valley Forge, McDowell-Pa., Normandy, Elyria Catholic, Chagrin Falls) by a combined margin of 21-0. The four-match un-scored on streak streak is River’s longest since the 2013 state championship squad put together a late-season stretch of six straight clean sheets (Oct. 9-29). The Pirates are now looking forward to five straight home games to close out the season.
Henry Ford II (MI) kicker is closing in on the Macomb Area Conference Record
The Falcons’ edged out the Roseville Panthers on the 22nd 31-28 in a total team effort. Kicker Alex Steinwascher’s Field Goal during the game was his 7th of the season, tying the HFII school record and putting the MAC (Macomb Area Conference) season record in his sights. He needs three to tie with four games left to go. The MHSAA title stands at 19.
AC Flora (SC) pulls off a perfect hook and ladder TD
During the AC Flora Falcons’ away game at Fairfield Central, QB Josh Heatly connected with receivers RJ Mobley and Raborn Dismuke to pull off a hook and ladder play that we can’t stop watching.
2017 Chick-Fil-A Classic Teams Announced, includes 5 VNN Schools
Too soon for basketball? The Annual Chick-fil-A Classic Holiday Basketball Tournament announced the 16 teams competing in this year’s holiday basketball tournament. Held in South Carolina at Richland Northeast High School on December 20, 21, 22 & 23, the tournament is often a who’s who of nationally-ranked, defending state champions teams, as well as nationally-ranked players. This year’s teams include 5 VNN-partner schools, so we all know who to root for.

Iconic two-toned pants continue to be rallying point for the Temple Wildcats faithful.
The blue-front, white-back football pants of the Temple Wildcats (TX) have become a tradition of their very own. Last Sunday, wildcatstrong.com published an article detailing the history of how they came to be, straight from the mouth of the first person to see the first sketch, on a napkin, from legendary Temple Coach Ted Dawson who coached the Wildcats from 1946-1953. A must read.
Calvin Furbee named to the 2017 USA Swimming Scholastic All-American Team
On Monday the 11th, USA Swimming named 1,100 prep swimmers across the US, who excel in the classroom and in the pool as 2016-17 Scholastic All-America selections. One of those named was Grandview Heights (OH) Senior swimmer Calvin Furbee, the only male selection from Central Ohio. Calvin is currently being recruited by several Division I universities.
