John Lush AD of the Month
Meet John Lush, the Athletic Director at Henry E. Lackey High School in Indian Head, Maryland. With an impressive background in education and a passion for sports, Lush is making a difference in the lives of his students both on and off the field.
He grew up in a small town in Pennsylvania and attended the University of Pittsburgh, where he graduated with a B.A. in English Writing and a Master’s in Secondary Education English. He has spent the past eighteen years of his career at Lackey and is hopeful to spend the next sixteen there as well.
While Lush started his career teaching only English, he eventually found his true niche as the Head Football Coach and later took on the role of Head Coach in Wrestling, Boys Lacrosse, and Softball. In addition, he was the SGA Co-Sponsor for two years and is currently the AVID Site Coordinator.
What drives him in all these roles is his belief that discipline, dedication, respect, and responsibility build character – all traits necessary for success in life. He sees his programs as a way to help shape and focus his students’ goals and lives rather than judge them.
Now in his fourth year as the Athletic Director, Lush has immersed himself in the community, working tirelessly to come up with new activities and programs for his students. He spends seven days a week in the building, constantly striving to provide opportunities for his students to engage in meaningful pursuits that will keep them out of trouble.
To him, his students are like his own kids – he is fully invested in their welfare and wants to see them succeed. He uses his classroom and sports programs to make a difference in their lives, helping them explore and uncover the many possibilities available.
Ultimately, Lush’s philosophy of education is rooted in the belief that sports and education can work hand in hand to shape students’ lives for the better. Through discipline, dedication, respect, and responsibility, Lush is helping his students build character and prepare for success on and off the field!
